Adyn gets off the bus after school on November 11, 2015.
11-year-old Adyn Bucher is just like any other sixth grader. She loves Harry Potter, hates math, and is a master of sass and sarcasm. The only difference is that Adyn has spent most of her life in a wheelchair. Adyn was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type II when she was 18 months old. SMA, a genetic disorder that reduces muscle control and limits mobility, is relatively rare, affecting only about 1 in 6,000 people. Despite Adyn’s physical limitations, with the help of her parents and health aides she lives a normal life and experiences the same joys and issues as any other preteen.
Adyn sits at the dinner table with her parents, Brian and Lucy, and her sister Seneca on November 11, 2015, at their home in Athens, Ohio.
Adyn was born in 2004 in Columbus, Ohio. She developed normally throughout her first few months and learned to sit on her own, but she never began to crawl. Her parents took her back to the hospital where she was diagnosed with SMA.
Tracie Jordan, a paraprofessional at Alexander Schools who helps Adyn with tasks throughout the day, works with her on math class work. Certain concessions are made for Adyn, like allowing her to use a dry erase board and occasionally a laptop, in order to make it easier for her to complete her schoolwork.
Adyn fiddles with the golden snitch joystick on her wheelchair. The snitch is one of many pieces of Harry Potter paraphernalia Adyn owns, and Brian attributes Adyn's "obsession" with the series to her crush on Rupert Grint, the actor who plays Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies.
Adyn laughs as she talks to Macy during lunch.
Adyn speeds by her friends on the parking lot during recess. Adyn moves faster than any of her friends and frequently beats them in races.
Adyn coughs into a machine that registers the strength of her exhales. Subsequently a suctioned straw is used to remove the mucus that Adyn coughs up.
The Bucher family watches The Grinch after dinner on December 2, 2015. Brian has a ban on Christmas celebrations before Thanksgiving, but that doesn't prevent Seneca from wearing Christmas themed pajamas every night throughout the entire month of December.
Brian helps Adyn with her homework in the evening on December 2, 2015. Adyn completes her social studies homework quickly and easily, but hates working on math and spends much more time on it.
The Bucher's Saint Bernard, Macy, comes to Adyn's bedside as she prepares to go to sleep. Macy walks into Adyn's room every night as she is put to bed.
